Miss Keith

December of 1956, founding director of Camp Monterey, Miss Dollie Williams visited with 13-year old Keith Rogers and her mother in their home in Knoxville, TN. Miss Dollie told Keith about summers at Camp Monterey and asked Keith if she would like to come. It sounded like heaven and it was! Keith went to Monterey every summer after that as a camper and continued as a Counselor and Crafts teacher when she went to college.

In 1983, she reconnected with Camp Monterey. Miss Dollie invited her to be on staff and bring her daughter with her to Camp. Keith and her husband wanted their children to have the opportunities the Williams’ camps offered, so each summer for eleven years, Keith and her children packed up to spend two months in the hills of Tennessee. Keith was on Sr. Staff as unit leader and head of the woodshed. As an 8-week staffer, she learned all the ins and outs of the camp program, painted murals for special events, made awards, wrote Camp church services and worked with girls of all ages. In 1996, Miss Dollie asked Keith to become the next Director of Camp Monterey. They worked together for a year, and Keith continued working for the next twenty years with the directors of Camp Country Lad, Mr. Malcolm and Miss Patsy. Now she and Miss Dollie’s granddaughter, Marion Williams, work together with Claire Brown and a wonderful staff of talented and dedicated women, continuing Miss Dollie’s dream where enduring values are the basis of our way of treating other people with kindness and always in an atmosphere of fun.

Senior Staff

Camp Monterey employs women to be on the Sr. Staff who are good role models, who think It is important for children to be out in nature, who know how to make children have fun in simple ways, and encourage them to try new skills while improving the ones they already have. Our Sr. Staff specializes in one or more of the activity areas and heads our departments. They are also Unit leaders who work with the counselors and campers in a Unit made up of girls in the same grade. They help to make all the campers in the Unit feel that they are part of the group. A Sr. Staff leader accompanies each Unit on outings to ensure safety

Counselors

Counselors

Our counselors are the core of our program. With a staff member to every two to three campers, we have a high staff to camper ratio. They are most often former campers or selected after a successful interview and letters of recommendation from former staff. They guide the younger children through their activities, head the table at mealtime, make cabin chores fun, and lead devotions at night..
The counselor staff in a cabin will include a Counselor, who has one year of college or more, and Assistant Counselor who has finished high school and/or a Counselor-in-Training, who is a rising High school senior and attended Camp Monterey as a camper.

Kitchen Staff

Kitchen activities are directed and maintained by a Head of Kitchen who is a member of the Senior Staff. She works with our experienced cook to provide nutritious and well-balanced meals family style, three times a day. Mothers of campers come during the summer to aid in Kitchen activities and helpers from the Mennonite community assist In meal preparation. We provide a salad bar twice a day and a vegetarian option when meat is served as the main dish.

Nurse
A registered nurse lives at Camp and maintains the infirmary which we call “The Health House.” She is on duty at all times and is responsible for dispensing medications.
