Counselors

Our counselors are the core of our program. They are most often former campers or selected after a successful interview and letters or recommendation from former staff. They are cabin leaders and also teach in the various activity areas under the guidance of Senior Staff.

Camp Monterey counselors come with experience of working with children either as former campers and team leaders and/or as part of their college or church programs at home. They are responsible for maintaining a family atmosphere in the cabin, guiding children through their activities, heading tables at mealtime, making cabin chores fun, sitting with their cabin at Church and leading devotions at night.

Being counselors broadens their own experience as they learn how to manage groups more effectively and deal with small conflicts which normally arise. They are able to change roles quickly and find themselves being mentors, Moms, big sisters and motivators all in one day. They root for their campers, encourage them to go the next level of their favorite activity, rave about their craft projects and feel proud when they see their accomplishments. Those who were campers love passing on the gifts they received from their counselors when they were growing up at Camp.

Counselor with Campers

Each cabin will include a Counselor, who has one year of college or more, an Assistant Counselor who has finished high school and/or a Counselor in Training, who is a rising high school senior and attended Camp Monterey as a camper.
